Stars eliminated from SAC Tournament in Harvey's finale

Brian Harvey collected 813 wins in 34 years at OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Brian Harvey concluded his head-coaching career after Oklahoma City University was eliminated from the Sooner Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament quarterfinals by Mid-America Christian 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Evangel Field.
In the final 10 minutes, Madi Caputo, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., launched two shots, including one on goal, but the Stars couldn't find the net before time expired. OCU finished the season with a record of 9-9, while the Evangels improved to 12-4-1 and advanced to the SAC tournament semifinals.
The Evangels broke the scoreless tie in the 28th minute off an Ariadna Ramirez goal, set up by Kyleigh Gibson's assist. The score was Ramirez's eighth goal of the season.
The Evangels owned a 12-10 shot advantage.
Nadine Steiner, a freshman from Mutlangen, Germany, had six saves and dropped to 9-9 as the Stars goalkeeper. Jennifer Starwalt tallied five saves and moved to 12-4-1 in the net for the Evangels.
Caputo had three shots on goal, while Annie Bragg, a sophomore from Norman, Okla., and Bailey Webb, a junior from Oklahoma City, both added one shot.
A free kick by Hailey Terrell, a junior from Austin, Texas, in the 70th minute was close to tying the game for the Stars but the ball nailed the crossbar.
Harvey led the OCU soccer program from its inception with the men's program starting in 1986 and the women's squad in 1994. The Stars finished the year 9-9.
Harvey announced prior to the season this would be his final season at the helm. Harvey guided OCU to a combined men's and women's record of 813-341-70 through 34 years. OCU's women went 378-130-27 in 26 years, while the OCU men posted a 435-211-43 mark under Harvey.
"I have met some really nice people, so many people who have gone on and done some really good things in life," Harvey said. "Hopefully I was a little part of that, just helping them up the road in life."
He led OCU to 10 men's soccer conference championships, two NAIA Championships appearances and a national semifinals finish in 2008 as well as 13 SAC regular-season titles, five SAC Tournament championships, seven national-tournament trips and a runner-up finish in the 2001 NAIA Championships in women's play.
Harvey notched his 800th career victory in the women's season opener 3-0 against Houston-Victoria on Aug. 31 in Victoria, Texas. Harvey owns membership in the NAIA Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Soccer Association Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma City University Athletics Hall of Fame.
In honor of being the only soccer coach in Oklahoma City University soccer history, the university formally dedicated "Brian Harvey Field" with a special ceremony on Aug. 17.
"I was little embarrassed at first, to be honest with you," Harvey said. "I come to work, I do my job. I did not expect that people would honor me in that manner but I am very proud that they did."
Mid-America Christian will face USAO in an SAC Tournament semifinal game on Tuesday in Chickasha, Okla.
