Texas Wesleyan gets past Stars in overtime 2-1

Stars lose first match in conference play

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University women's soccer team saw its two-game winning streak to start conference play come to an end Tuesday night as it dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime to Texas Wesleyan at Brian Harvey Field.
With the loss, the Stars fell to 6-5 on the year, 2-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Texas Wesleyan improved to 9-3, 4-0 in the SAC.
The first goal of the match came in the eighth minute when Texas Wesleyan took the lead off a 15-yard shot from Tameir Grosvenor that found the bottom left corner. Savanna Barron was credited with the assist. A scoring drought ensued for quite some time, with neither team able to create many opportunities. The Rams led 1-0 at the break.
After 32 more minutes of scoreless play, the Stars got tripped up in the box and received a penalty kick. Annie Bragg, a sophomore from Norman, Okla., knocked it in for OCU in the 77th minute to make it 1-1. Neither side was able to find the net in the final 13 minutes and the game went to overtime.
Grosvenor produced the game-winning goal from 6 yards out in the 96th minute. The ball landed at her feet off a missed shot from Barron. Grosvenor leads the NAIA in goals scored this season with 27. She had 21 goals last season and 19 goals back in 2017.
OCU produced 13 total shots on Tuesday, nine on goal. TXWU tallied 16 total shots, seven on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Nadine Steiner collected five saves and now has 25 total saves on the year.
Oklahoma City next faces No. 11 John Brown (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Brian Harvey Field.
