Stars fall to Wayland Baptist 22-20

McGowan pins his opponent in heavyweight match for OCU

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist (Texas) edged Oklahoma City University 22-20 on Saturday at the Hutcherson Center.
Bryson McGowan supplied a pin, while Montana Moon's technical fall put the Stars ahead 20-9 before Wayland Baptist answered with wins in the final three matches. Oklahoma City, ranked 11th in NAIA men's wrestling, dropped to 2-2 in duals this season.
Wayland Baptist's Joseph Rios provided the decisive victory 12-5 over Connor Holman in the 149-pound match. Kaleb McAlexander collected a forfeit, while Jacob Campa of the Pioneers nipped Logan Chappell 5-4 at 133.
"It's the first time this year I've been disappointed with the team as a whole," OCU coach Sam Hazewinkel said. "However, output reflects leadership. I believe this loss is on my shoulders. I didn't prepare the team correctly. I let us get too proud, and being from the Bible belt, we all know that pride leads to destruction. We are going to humble ourselves and use this to get better."
McGowan pinned Baylor Walker to put OCU on top 15-9 in the dual. McGowan, a senior from Hulbert, Okla., posted his fifth fall of the season. McGowan, ranked fifth among NAIA 285-pounders, moved to 11-8 in 2018-19.
Moon, a sophomore from Chickasha, Okla., rolled to a 16-0 technical fall over Gabe Gray in the 125-pound contest. Moon moved up to seventh at his weight in the latest ratings.
OCU picked up victories in its first three bouts of the dual. Jon McGowan of the Stars took a 6-4 victory over Damerea Speller in the 157-pound match, which started off the dual.
The Stars' Matt Landgraff followed with an 8-6 win over Zach Mitchell at 165. Chase Vincent prevailed 8-5 against Tommy St. John.
OCU wrestles next against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in Bartlesville, Okla.
