Stars split doubleheader vs. USAO

OCU remains one game ahead of Drovers in conference standings

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University split its doubleheader with USAO in a matchup between two top-five teams in NAIA softball Tuesday night at Ann Lacy Stadium, with the Stars taking game one 1-0 and dropping game two 2-1.
Julianne Abeloe and Bailey Whitmore led the Stars on offense, each notching three total hits against the Drovers. OCU, ranked fifth in the NAIA, went to 42-7 overall and 27-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference while third-ranked USAO went to 45-4 on the year and 26-4 in conference play. The Stars remain one game ahead of USAO in the league standings.
Oklahoma City and USAO were in the thick of a pitcher's duel in game one, then in the bottom of the sixth inning Brittany Perez broke the tie after her single to left field drove in Kennedy Jackson for the game-winning run. The Drovers were shutout in the seventh to hand OCU its fourth consecutive victory.
Georgia Wall, a junior from Marlow, Okla., pitched seven shutout innings and allowed only four hits while striking out six. Wall improved her record to 17-4 in the circle and has thrown six or more strikeouts in 14 games this season.
The Stars loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning in game two, but were unable to capitalize after a foul out and strikeout ended the inning. The game remained scoreless through five innings, until USAO's Randa Hatter belted a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to give the Drovers a 2-0 lead.
OCU loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning and cut into the lead after a passed ball allowed Perez to score, but was unable to bring in the tying run and headed to the seventh down by one run. The Stars again loaded the bases in the seventh, but again came up empty-handed as a fly out to right field ended the game. OCU ended Tuesday's doubleheader with 15 runners left on base.
Jaden Shores, a sophomore from Blanchard, Okla., threw five innings and allowed four hits and two runs while striking out three. Abby Meador pitched the final two innings in relief and tossed two strikeouts.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 2 p.m. Thursday for a doubleheader against Central Christian (Kan.) at Ann Lacy Stadium.
