Stars outlast Southwestern Christian 80-69

Galindo scores 20-plus points for sixth consecutive game

OKLAHOMA CITY – Daniela Galindo had 29 points to lead Oklahoma City University to an 80-69 victory over Southwestern Christian on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Galindo notched her sixth consecutive game with 20 or more points and has scored at least 27 points in eight games this season. The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 22-5 overall and 15-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Southwestern Christian dropped to 10-14 on the year and 5-12 in SAC play.
Galindo, a senior from Shattuck, Okla., hit 12 of her 18 shots from the field.
"This time of year everybody's trying to get certain spots in the conference and everybody's playing hard, so we'll be glad to win even if it's by one," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "What Daniela did tonight, putting the team on her back – especially when Brooke got in foul trouble and we couldn't get it inside – I'm really proud of her."
Oklahoma City opened up a 10-point lead after the first quarter and led by as many as 26 points in the first half. The Stars capitalized off of 10 Central Christian first-half turnovers, resulting in 12 points for OCU. Brooke Irwin, a senior from Mustang, Okla., had all eight of her points in the first two quarters of Thursday's contest.
The Stars crashed the glass and outrebounded Southwestern Christian 21-12 in the first half and 37-25 for the game. The Eagles' Eliora Johnson entered the game as the leading rebounder in NAIA Division I with 15.1 rebounds a night, but was held to just nine boards on Thursday.
OCU's 47-22 halftime lead quickly shrank in the third period, as Central Christian whittled away at the Stars' lead and ended the final five minutes on a 17-4 run to cut the deficit to eight. The Eagles turned seven Oklahoma City turnovers into 10 points in the third and chopped the Stars' lead down to two early in the fourth.
"Southwestern Christian's third quarter was great," Overton said. "You can say all you want about us not being focused, but I thought we were. (Southwestern Christian) jumped up, made shots and executed great and when they did they made us hurt. I give a lot of credit to them, because their kids kept playing and a lot of times when you're down 25 at half you kind of fold but they never did."
Oklahoma City responded with a 15-5 run and built its lead to a dozen with 3:53 to go. Taylor LaCour knocked down five free throws in the final minutes to keep the game out of reach. LaCour, junior from Georgetown, Texas chipped in 14 points and NaShyla Hammons, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Stars return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) in Waxahachie, Texas.
