Stars finish seventh in NWCA National Duals with 26-20 win

Galindo, Redford and Watters each go 4-0 for OCU in dual tournament

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oklahoma City University collected a seventh-place finish in the NWCA National Duals with a 26-20 victory over Grays Harbor (Wash.) on Friday at the Fort Wayne Convention Center.
The Stars, ranked 10th in the Women's College Wrestling Association, went 2-1 on the day to finish 2-2 in the dual tournament. OCU also won 30-14 over Cumberlands (Ky.) and fell 30-14 to King (Tenn.).
Erin Redford, Yvonne Galindo and Rachel Watters produced technical-fall wins to secure Oklahoma City's victory in the seventh-place dual. Ninth-rated Grays Harbor led 9-0, and the dual was tied twice.
Redford gave OCU the lead for good with a 12-1 win over Cassandra Parra in the 143-pound match. Galindo won 10-0 over Veronica Coppolino to give the Stars the winning dual points. At 170, Watters' 10-0 victory put the dual out of reach. Leiana Nacapuy added a fall at 116 pounds for Oklahoma City.
Watters provided OCU with its highlight against King, which holds the No. 5 spot in the team rankings. Watters, a sophomore from Ankeny, Iowa, rolled 10-0 over Keely Sage in the 170-pound bout. Galindo, a senior from El Paso, Texas, knocked off Jessi Kee 9-5 at 155 pounds.
Oklahoma City notched six wins in the final seven matches against fourth-ranked Cumberlands. After Cumberlands went up 12-2, Monica Mendoza of the Stars took a pin 1:18 over Madison Angelito at 123 pounds.
Redford, a freshman from White River, Wash., added a fall in 1:53 of Bridgette Duty in the 136-pound match. Galindo pinned Anna Naylor in 3:00.
In the 2018 NWCA National Duals, Galindo, Redford and Watters each went 4-0 for OCU. Redford collected two falls, and Galindo had one pin. Watters, ranked fifth in the WCWA at 170 pounds, won each of her matches by technical fall. The Stars took five consecutive crowns in the NWCA National Duals from 2008-12.
OCU competes in the Ottawa Braves Open on Jan. 14 in Ottawa, Kan.
