OKLAHOMA CITY – Shaun Corso hit a three-run double down the left-field line in the bottom of the 10th to give top-ranked Oklahoma City University a thrilling 17-16 walk-off victory over Campbellsville (Ky.) on Wednesday to win the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket at Jim Wade Stadium.
Oklahoma City (48-8) rallied from a five-run deficit with six runs in the bottom half of the 10th inning to clinch its 15th NAIA World Series berth in school history.
The win was also the 1,400th career win for OCU head coach Denney Crabaugh, who moved to 1,400-434-2 in his 29th year as the skipper of the Stars. Crabaugh has directed Oklahoma City to 13 NAIA World Series appearances and the 2005 national championship. He is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the NAIA Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the OCU Athletics Hall of Fame.
In the 10th, the Stars got their first three runs via a wild pitch and sacrifice flies from Skyler Bean and Lane Milligan.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Corso stepped to the plate and delivered a shot down the left-field line to bring Jared Baker all the way around from first and give OCU the walk off win.
The Tigers tied the score at 11 in the eighth and put up five runs in the top half of the 10th to take a 16-11 lead on David Montoya's three-run home run. OCU, however, responded with six runs in the 10th.
OCU opened the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from Corso.
Campbellsville, ranked No. 23 in the NAIA, answered with a run in the second and three in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The Stars responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the third and took the lead with four runs in the fourth inning.
In the fourth, OCU got an RBI single from Branden Grieger and a two-RBI single by Jerame Littell to take an 8-4 lead.
After Campbellsville (35-21) produced a run in the fifth, Oklahoma City stretched its lead to 11-5 thanks to a three-run homer from Hunter Aguirre in the bottom half of the inning.
Corso, a junior from Lancaster, Pa., finished the day 3-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Grieger, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
On the mound, Bryce Milligan (3-0) picked up the win in relief after throwing 0.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Oklahoma City is now 14-3 against ranked opponents this season and have now scored double-digit runs in eight straight games.
The Stars will head to Lewiston, Idaho, for the NAIA World Series on May 26-June 2. The 10-team bracket will be determined Friday.
