OKLAHOMA CITY – The top-ranked Oklahoma City University softball team remained unbeaten in Sooner Athletic Conference play after 8-0 and 7-1 victories over Texas Wesleyan on Sunday night at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Oklahoma City (51-1, 22-0 SAC) became the first NAIA team this season to reach 50 wins. The Stars have posted 50-win seasons in each of the past five seasons and 20 times in coach Phil McSpadden's 30 years at OCU.
OCU scored early and often in game one with three runs in each of the first two innings, highlighted by a Bailey Whitmore solo home run and RBI singles from McRae Cayton and Jaci Smith.
Cayton and Smith produced two more runs in the fourth inning when Smith, a sophomore from Godley, Texas, hit an RBI double and Cayton, a senior out of Irvine, Calif., drove her home with a single through the left side.
Cayton, the reigning SAC player of the week, finished game one 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Smith went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Georgia Wall (22-0) recorded the win for OCU as she pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four to help Oklahoma City record their 30th win via run rule this season.
Texas Wesleyan, 23-16, 11-9 SAC, jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first in game two, but the Stars responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Cayton.
OCU took the lead for good in the third inning on RBI singles from Smith and Cayton.
Oklahoma City added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Smith.
Once again, Cayton and Smith led the way offensively for Oklahoma City, going a combined 4-for-7 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Over both games, the two combined to drive in nine of OCU's 15 runs.
Abby Meador (18-1) pitched five innings for the Stars, allowing one unearned runs and just two hits while striking out three. Jaden Shores retired six of the seven batters she faced over the final two innings to secure the win.
