Stars keep win streak intact with 5-2, 12-inning win

Top-ranked OCU sweep twin bill from Houston-Victoria after 4-2 win

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University edged Houston-Victoria 5-2 in 12 innings after a 4-2 Stars win Thursday at Oran Good Park.
Amanda Ingram scored on Abby Meador's groundball to second base, while Kali Pugh tacked on a two-run home run in the 12th for OCU. The Stars, top-ranked in NAIA softball, moved to 46-0 on the year.
Oklahoma City stretched its winning streak to 51 games dating back to the 2016 NAIA Softball World Series. OCU surpassed the NAIA win streak record with its 45th consecutive victory 9-0 at Oklahoma Wesleyan on April 6. Concordia (Calif.) had a 44-game win streak in 2012. OCU's previous school-record win streak was 29 set by its 2016 club. The Stars last lost 1-0 to Saint Xavier (Ill.) on May 30, 2016 in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Stars' current streak is longer than the NCAA Division III record of 43 games by St. Thomas (Minn.) in 2004-05 or Arizona's NCAA Division I record winning string of 47 in 1997. In 2005, Northern Kentucky won 55 consecutive games to put together the NCAA Division II record winning streak and best win streak in college softball history.
Meador went all 12 innings, holding Houston-Victoria (28-16) to an earned run on four hits and a walk. Meador, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., struck out 16 and moved to 18-0. Meador logged 159 pitches.
Laci Joyner's RBI double into left field tied the game 2-2 in the fifth. Neither team scored until the 12th as the teams didn't use the international tiebreaker of placing a runner on second base in extra innings until the 10th inning.
Samantha Stallbaumer, a sophomore from Haven, Kan., went 4-for-5, scored twice and doubled, while Jaci Smith, a sophomore from Godley, Texas, was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Pugh, a senior from Vista, Calif., turned in a 2-for-6 performance with two runs scored, two RBIs and her 15th homer.
In the first game, OCU erased a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the seventh. Smith pounded a solo blast over the right-field fence to knot the score 2-2 with one out in the seventh. With two out, Bailey Whitmore nailed a two-run single to left to preserve the Stars' winning string.
Stallbaumer scored the Stars' first run of the game on Joyner's infield base hit in the third.
McRae Cayton, a senior from Irvine, Calif., went 2-for-3 and scored a run, and Smith was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Joyner, a junior from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a run driven in.
Georgia Wall, a sophomore from Marlow, Okla., worked the final 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits to gain the victory. Wall fanned four in improving to 19-0 on the year.
Oklahoma City faces West Texas A&M, ranked sixth in NCAA Division II, in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday in Canyon, Texas.
