Stars pound 13th-ranked York 10-1 to open season

OCU scores combined 21 runs in two games vs. Avila, York

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University baseball team opened the season with a 10-1 win over York (Neb.) followed by an 11-0 whitewash of Avila (Mo.) on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars (2-0) hammered five home runs on the day. York, ranked 13th in the NAIA, moved to 4-2 and Avila fell to 0-2.
Oklahoma City began the first game with a flurry of first-inning runs, all with two outs. With courtesy runner Caleb Davis on first base after a single by catcher Joe Lytle, senior outfielder Cory Linn singled to right field to bring home the Stars' first run of 2017. More runs ensued as a Garrett Foster triple cleared the bases and brought home two. Foster was then driven in on a single by Hunter Aguirre to give OCU the 4-0 lead.
The Stars added three more runs in the third inning. After a Shaun Corso single, Foster reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder which advanced Corso to third. Corso then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop after a single by Jerame Littell. A Skyler Bean single brought in Foster for the second run of the inning. On the following pitch, Littell, who moved up to third on the single, scored on a wild pitch.
Oklahoma City kept up their hot hitting in the fourth inning when Corso doubled to left field with two outs and was followed by a home run to the left center left center-field gap by Foster. Littell followed up with a single and advanced to second and third on wild pitches. He was then drove driven home by Aguirre.
On the mound for OCU, Matt Young got the win for the Stars, going five innings, giving up two hits and striking out nine. Tyler Milligan came in and pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out one.
In the second game against Avila, the Stars' bats came out on fire once again. With one out in the first, Lytle doubled over the center fielder's head and subsequently scored on a Jared Baker double.
In the second inning, Littell reached on an error by the center fielder and eventually scored on an Aguirre ground ball to second base. After Bean reached on a walk, Grieger hit his second home run of the day over the center-field wall to give OCU the 4-0 lead.
OCU struck for two more runs in the third and three in the fourth. In the third, Bean hit an RBI double to left to score both Aguirre and Littell. Then in the fourth, Linn hit a double to left-center and reached home on a home run by Corso.  Foster followed with a double and scored on a passed ball after advancing to third on a fly ball to center by Littell.
The OCU lead swelled to 11 in the sixth when Foster and Littell hit back-to-back jacks to center and left field, respectively.
Roberto Delgado was spectacular on the mound for OCU. He threw five innings while allowing no runs on just one hit and struck out 10 of the 17 batters he faced to secure the victory. Garrett Pike came into the game in the sixth and only allowed one hit while striking out four.
On the day, OCU was led offensively by Corso who went 4-for-8 in both games with two doubles and two RBI.
The Stars will take on these same two teams Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium with a 10 a.m. game vs. York followed by a 3 p.m. game against Avila.
