OCU at St. Gregory's women's basketball preview

Stars finish three-game stretch of away games

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University looks to stay on top of the Sooner Athletic Conference as they take on St. Gregory's in their third straight road game in Shawnee, Okla.

ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars throttled USAO 76-51 Thursday at USAO Fieldhouse in Chickasha, Okla. OCU (23-2, 14-1 SAC) got 21 first-half points from Daniela Wallen and shot 42.9 percent from 3-point-range.
Wallen, a 5-foot-11 senior from Caracas, Venezuela, ended the game with 28 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. She is now second in the conference with 13 double-doubles this season. Wallen supplies the Stars with 24.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.00 steals a contest. She is the NAIA's top scorer in 2016-17.
Daniela Galindo, a 5-10 junior from Shattuck, Okla., totaled 21 points, 14 of which were in the second half, four rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. She has now scored at least 20 points in five of her last six games. Galindo produces 17.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.28 thefts a game. Her 90.9 percent free-throw percentage ranks second in the NAIA. Allison Frey, a 5-9 junior out of Mustang, Okla., scored eight points while going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc in the win.
The Stars lead NAIA Division I in both field-goal (50.4 percent) and free throw (77.6) percentage. To see where OCU ranks against the NAIA statistically, click here.
Oklahoma City remained at seventh in the newest rankings. OCU has made 209 consecutive appearances in the NAIA ratings since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2015. SAC coaches installed the Stars as the league's preseason favorite. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 16 times.
OCU owns a 43-1 all-time advantage over St. Gregory's. OCU blew by SGU 106-41 on Jan. 19 at Abe Lemons Arena. Galindo led all scorers with 25 and the Stars opened the game on a 32-0 run.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: St. Gregory's fell 75-59 at the hands of Texas Wesleyan Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. SGU (2-20, 0-15 SAC) trailed by as many as 26 points in the game and shot just 33.3 percent from the floor.
Shanques Garrett, a 6-3 senior, led the way with 19 points and 15 rebounds, 10 of which were on the offensive glass. She averages 8.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.71 blocked shots per contest. Kelsie Howgard, a 5-10 junior, provided 16 points, three assists and four treys. She produces 8.4 points, 4.5 boards and 3.1 assist per game.
SGU ranks 17th in the NAIA with a 72.7 team free throw percentage. They were picked by the coaches to finish ninth in the conference before the season.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Bo Overton returns to OCU for his second season as its head coach. Overton has coaching experience on the professional level in China, Russia and the WNBA, as well as college head-coaching experience with Missouri-Kansas City. Overton has been an assistant on the international level for the Bahamas and China, including the 2012 Olympics with the Chinese team.
Jenone Bell is in his second season at the helm of the Cavaliers. In her first year, she helped more than double the program's win total from each of the previous two seasons, finishing with a mark of 10-16. She brings 20 years of coaching experience to Shawnee. She came to St. Gregory's after serving three seasons as the head coach at Southern University-Shreveport. Bell was an assistant at Lindenwood (Mo.) and Lincoln (Mo.) a combined 14 years prior to that.
