OCU ends year in shootout to John Brown

Stars eliminated on penalty kicks 4-2

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University's season came to an end Thursday night when the Stars fell in a penalty-kick shootout 4-2 to sixth-seeded John Brown (Ark.) in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament.
OCU finished the season 14-3-2 overall, the program's best record since 2009. John Brown went to 8-8-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament, where it will face Southwestern Christian on Monday in Bethany, Okla.
Neither team was able to create much offensive momentum on Thursday night. After the match's first 45 minutes, JBU had accumulated only three shots on goal while the Stars had just two. Once the final whistle blew to end the second half, John Brown had tallied seven shots on goal and OCU had four.
The two squads also needed extra time to decide a winner in their meeting on Oct. 24. They ended regulation with the score tied at one, and it seemed like the match was headed toward a draw until OCU senior Alexandre Taiar was fouled in the box with 59 seconds left. Taiar drilled the penalty kick and notched his seventh goal of the year.
On Thursday, Taiar was the first OCU player to attempt a shot in the shootout but, his kick soared too high and missed the goal. Ryan Williams found the back of the net for JBU's first shot.
Henrik Verolet and Aboubakr Diallo both sunk the next two shots for OCU, but were matched by two straight scores by the Golden Eagles. With John Brown ahead 3-2, the Stars needed to make their next two shots to have a chance to win the match or send it into sudden death penalty kicks.
Those hopes quickly faded as Nick Stremel saw his shot hit the right post for OCU's second miss of the shootout. JBU followed with the game-winning goal from Joao Silva to clinch the shootout victory.
Vladimir Kalajdzic, a senior from Novi Sad, Serbia, earned his eighth shutout of the season in Thursday's match, collecting eight saves on the night. Kalajdzic ends his career as
OCU's all-time leader in saves with 374.
