OCU rallies past Jamestown 25-19

Stars blank Adrian 42-0, move into NWCA National Duals semifinals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oklahoma City University advanced to the NWCA National Duals semifinals with a 25-19 win over Jamestown (N.D.) on Thursday at the Fort Wayne Convention Center.
The Stars, ranked third in the Women's College Wrestling Association dual ratings, routed Adrian (Mich.) 42-0 on Thursday evening. OCU (4-0) takes on fourth-ranked McKendree (Ill.) at 10 a.m. CST Friday in the tournament semifinals.
Oklahoma City erased a 17-0 deficit to 13th-ranked Jamestown by winning the last six matches of the dual. Rachel Watters provided the Stars with the go-ahead victory 13-5 over Myranda Velazquez in the 170-pound contest. Watters, a freshman from Ankeny, Iowa, put OCU ahead 21-19.
Carla Ponce started the Stars' run with an 8-1 win over Caitlyn Kaz in the 130-pound match. OCU's Heiley Garcia won the 136-pound bout by fall over Josylyn Pachecko in 1:26. Margaret Douma pinned Cara Romeike in 53 seconds at 143, then Natalia Hinojo picked up a forfeit to tie the dual 18-18.
The Stars posted their 20th shutout in team history against No. 21 Adrian. Adrian gave up four forfeits to OCU.
Garcia and Monica Mason produced falls for the Stars. Garcia, a senior from Carrollton, Texas, finished off Kassidy Block in 3:46, while Mason, a sophomore from Marion, N.Y., completed the pin of Haylee McCoy in 33 seconds.
Hinojo, Ponce and Watters all came up with 10-0 technical-fall victories.
OCU has captured NWCA National Duals championships in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The Stars finished as NWCA National Duals runner-up for the third time in four years and advanced to the title dual for the eighth time in nine years last year.
