Stars strike early, take season opener 3-1

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took the 2016 men's soccer season opener 3-1 against Bethel (Kan.) on Thursday at Stars Field.
Logan Stewart, Juan Ocampo and Alexandre Taiar provided OCU with goals. The Stars improved to 1-0 to start the season, while Bethel (Kan.) drops to 0-2 on the year.
Taiar and Petar Djurdjevic led a furious OCU attack that included 35 shots on the day. Taiar recorded nine shots, scoring his first goal of the season, and Djurdjevic added six shots, two of which were on goal.
The Stars struck early as Stewart, a junior from Denton, Texas, scored only three minutes into the affair off a pass from Ocampo.
Bethel evened the match in the 29th minute after only spending several minutes in the Stars zone.
The dominant offensive showing for OCU only led to one goal in the first half as both squads entered intermission knotted at one.
OCU took no time in scoring as they netted their second goal of the game, breaking the 1-1 tie only 45 seconds into the second period. Ocampo, a senior from Boca Raton, Fla., scored after Alex Buckley provided a well-timed cross.
A late offensive flurry from Bethel proved no match as the Stars managed to control the tempo in maintaining the lead well into the second period. Taiar, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, iced the game in the 74th minute by scoring on a free kick.
OCU held the Threshers to only three shots, with Vladimir Kalajdzic only needing to save one shot on goal during the match in rolling to a 3-1 win. Kalajdzic's counterpart, Jesus Alba, had a masterful day behind net with nine saves, however, the Stars' offensive onslaught proved too much.
The next match for the Stars is vs. Lyon (Ark.) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Batesville, Ark.
