Stars flatten Bacone 42-10

OCU ends dual season 16-4

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University rolled to a 42-10 victory over Bacone on Friday night at the Palmer Center.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA wrestling, finished with their second most wins in a dual season with a 16-4 record. Archie Randall brought his men's and women's college head-coaching record to 255-97-3 and his combined college and high school ledger to 477-115-3.
OCU had its best men's dual season in 2007-08 with an 18-7-1 record. The Stars posted their second winning season in a row and fifth overall in 10 years.
Bryson McGowan and Derek Sivertsen supplied OCU with falls. Zach Skates took a technical-fall win, while James Landoll had a major-decision victory for the Stars.
McGowan, a freshman from Hulbert, Okla., pinned Jovanni Virgen in 2:47 in the 285-pound match to close the dual.
Sivertsen (29-9) finished off Adrian Virgen in 4:05 at 174. Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., has the fourth spot in the NAIA rankings.
Skates stomped Courtney Shavers 22-7 in the 157-pound bout. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., moved to 31-3. He is ranked second at his weight. With 154 career wins, Skates broke Nik Turner's OCU record this season of 127 compiled from 2007-12.
Landoll pounded Abel VillaMoreno 12-1 at 141. Landoll, a junior from Marysville, Kan., improved to 26-16 on the season. He is ranked 11th in the nation at his weight.
Oklahoma City hosts the NAIA South Qualifying Group Tournament at 9 a.m. Feb. 20 at Putnam City High School.
