OCU sinks Mid-America Christian 70-62

Fourth-quarter heroics lift Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University came up with clutch fourth-quarter play in a 70-62 victory over Mid-America Christian on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU put together a 16-8 fourth-quarter advantage to edge Mid-America. The Stars, ranked 14th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 13-5, 10-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Catherine Kruschke sank a pair of jumpers to propel a 7-0 Oklahoma City splurge to begin the fourth. Kruschke scored in the lane off Markeisha Johnson's setup to put the Stars up 61-54 with 5:02 left.
After Mid-America's D'Shala Culberson cut the Stars' lead to 61-59, OCU rang up seven unanswered points. Leah Cheney nailed a trey with 2:03 showing, then Daniela Wallen and Janae Haag added buckets for a 68-59 Stars advantage with 1:03 remaining.
Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, boosted Oklahoma City with 22 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., produced 17 points and four rebounds on 8-for-10 shooting from the floor, and Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., supplied the Stars 14 points, eight rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.
Haag, a junior from Olpe, Kan., contributed nine points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Cheney, a junior from Ault, Colo., piled up six points, seven rebounds, five assists and three thefts for OCU.
OCU registered a season-best six blocks to help limit Mid-America Christian to 37.1 percent shooting from the field – 27.6 percent in the second half.
Oklahoma City used 59.4 percent shooting from the floor in the first half to overcome a seven-point Mid-America lead. Alliyah Spatafora dropped in a 3 to put Mid-America up 9-2 early on.
The Stars meet Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 3 p.m. Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas.
