Stars edge Wayland Baptist 21-18

McGowan rallies OCU from 18-15 deficit

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Bryson McGowan's fall propelled Oklahoma City University to a 21-18 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Wednesday night at the Hutcherson Center in a clash of top-25 teams in NAIA wrestling.
With the Stars trailing 18-15 entering the 285-pound match, McGowan, a sophomore from Hulbert, Okla., delivered a pin over Keegan Kretzer in 37 seconds. Third-ranked Oklahoma City topped 14th-ranked Wayland Baptist in the first dual action of the season for both teams.
The Stars held a 15-6 advantage after Brok Williams of OCU pinned Logan Rock in 2:20 in the 165-pound bout. OCU's Gavin Millhouse prevailed 6-3 over Damarea Speller in the 157-pound contest.
Wayland Baptist answered as Cesar Alvarez at 174, Michael Napier at 184 and Riley Williams at 197 picked up wins. Williams knocked off OCU's Evan Hudson 5-2 at 197.
Matt Landgraff, a sophomore from Weeki Wachee, Fla., took a 12-7 win at 141 pounds for OCU. Mason Naifeh, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla., edged Virley Session in the 125-pound match for the Stars.
OCU competes next in the Oklahoma Open at 9 a.m. Sunday in Yukon, Okla.
