OCU pounds John Brown 84-50 in NAIA game of week

Stars improve to 3-3 against ranked NAIA Division I teams in 2015-16

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dismantled John Brown (Ark.) 84-50 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the NAIA Network women's basketball game of the week.
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, fueled the Stars with 23 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Fifteenth-ranked OCU improved to 7-4, 4-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and 19th-rated John Brown dipped to 9-7, 2-2 in the SAC.
Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., accumulated 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots, while Amanda Ingram, a junior from Oklahoma City, added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for Oklahoma City.
Ingram and Allison Frey downed three 3-pointers each as the Stars nailed a season-high 12 treys. OCU hit 12 of 23 3-point attempts. Frey, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., contributed 11 points.
"John Brown's got a good club," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "We talked to the team about getting off to a good start. I thought the last two games we've really done that. We set the tone especially with our defense not giving up easy shots. In the first half, they got three baskets in the paint. The rest of them were shots over the top of our defense. We're making shots, and that's a lot of fun to watch."
Wallen recorded her seventh double-double of the season to tie for the conference lead with Onyesonam Nolisa of Texas Wesleyan.
"She can do everything," Overton said of Wallen. "She can play defense and rebound. She's athletic and fun to watch. Really a smooth player."
The Stars held an opponent to 50 points or less for the third time this season. John Brown managed 32.7 percent shooting from the field and turned the ball over 23 times. OCU tallied
a season-high 15 steals to go with 26 points off turnovers and 28 fastbreak points.
OCU outscored John Brown 14-3 in the third quarter. After Kimmy Deines connected on a 3 early in the second half, John Brown missed 14 consecutive shots and remained scoreless for 11:33.
"Give our players a lot of credit," Overton said. "We talked at halftime about getting off to a good start in the first half and the second half. They came out of their locker room and really defended, really moving and helping each other."
OCU pushed its lead into double digits with a 13-0 second-quarter run. Frey and Leah Cheney sank 3s during the Stars' surge. Kruschke put OCU ahead 42-26 with a free throw with 56 seconds left in the second.
The Stars next play 6 p.m. Thursday at Mid-America Christian in Oklahoma City.
