Stars reach SAC Tournament championship game

OCU eliminates Southwestern Christian 14-7, then Wayland Baptist 7-3

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University battled its way into the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament championship game with a 7-3 win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Sunday night at Jim Wade Stadium.
Earlier Sunday afternoon, the Stars (41-11) ousted Southwestern Christian 14-7. Oklahoma City, ranked second in the NAIA, squares off with third-ranked Oklahoma Baptist at noon Monday at Jim Wade Stadium for the title.
Oklahoma Baptist can clinch its second consecutive SAC Tournament crown and third in four years by winning the noon title tilt. OCU needs two wins Monday to secure the conference tournament championship. Should the Stars win the noon game, another winner-take-all contest would follow.
In the nightcap, Ryan Wright drove in the winning run with an RBI base hit through the right side of the infield. Wright's single gave the Stars a 4-2 sixth-inning advantage.
Wayland Baptist cut its deficit to 4-3 in the seventh. Ethan Percell reached on an error, then scored on another OCU miscue.
Adam Clark came through with an eighth-inning two-run single into left field to answer for the Stars. J.J. Bissell grounded out to first base to bring home another OCU run in the ninth.
Dylan Delso provided the Stars an RBI single for a 1-0 first-inning edge. In the second, Reggie Wilson and Joe Lytle pounded back-to-back run-scoring hits to build a 3-0 OCU lead.
Lytle, a freshman from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Wilson, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run driven in for the Stars. Bissell, a junior from Windsor, Colo., added a 2-for-5 performance with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Wayland Baptist threatened in the bottom of the eighth as Josh Alexander had a single and Gaby De La Cruz drew a walk. Holden Lyons replaced OCU starter Matt Young on the mound, then snuffed out the rally by striking out two to retire the side.
Young, a sophomore right-hander from Glendora, Calif., posted the victory. Young went to 9-0 after logging 7.1 innings with 10 strikeouts. Lyons, a sophomore righty from Edmond, Okla., notched his sixth save of the year by going the last 1.2 innings and fanning three.
Against Southwestern Christian, OCU tallied the game's final six runs. In the seventh, Southwestern Christian chopped the OCU lead to 8-7 with Logan Palmer's RBI double and Andrew Walker's three-run home run.
The Stars put together a six-run eighth. Jared Baker ripped an RBI double over the center fielder's head, then reached home plate on a wild pitch. Clark doubled in another OCU run, then Lytle added an RBI single. Connor Lynch belted a two-run double to left for a 14-7 Stars cushion.
Bissell supplied OCU an 8-3 margin in the sixth. Bissell crushed an 0-1 offering over a right-field light pole for a three-run homer, his team-high 13th of the year.
Clark, a senior from St. John, New Brunswick, went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base, while Lynch, a senior from Marietta, Ga., was 4-for-5 with a double, run scored, two RBIs and a steal for Oklahoma City. Baker, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., went 3-for-4, scored twice, doubled and drove in a run, and Lytle was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Wilson, Wright and Josh Halbert chipped in two hits each as the Stars banged out 20 hits for the fourth time this year.
Skylar Janisse earned the victory, going to 4-5 on the season. Janisse, a junior righty from LaSalle, Ontario, Canada, worked the first 6.1 innings with two strikeouts. Miguel Gonzalez, a junior right-hander from Los Angeles, went the last 2.2 innings to pick up his seventh save of the year.
Clark and Wilson are tied for the tournament lead in RBIs with six. Lynch and Wilson are tied for the tournament lead with eight hits each.
