Stars sweep leaves McSpadden two wins away from milestone

OCU aims to give McSpadden most wins among four-year college softball coaches Friday

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Phil McSpadden drew to two wins shy of breaking the college softball record for career wins among four-year schools after top-ranked Oklahoma City University's pair of 9-3 victories over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Tuesday at the Oklahoma Wesleyan Field.
McSpadden's record sits at 1,456-356 in his 28th year as OCU coach. McSpadden will look to surpass Margie Wright's 1,457 wins when the Stars face Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Wright had a 1,457-542-3 record coaching for Illinois State from 1980-85 and Fresno State in 1986-2012. Mike Candrea stands third on the list with 1,418 wins in his 28th year for Arizona, while Carol Hutchins of Michigan has 1,405 wins in her 31st year.
McSpadden has guided the Stars to a 33-1 record and the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA this year. OCU handed McSpadden win No. 1,450 in its 8-0 romp past Southwestern Christian on March 30 in Bethany, Okla. Oklahoma City has captured national championships in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2007 with McSpadden at the helm.
In the first game Tuesday, Cheyanne Terry pounded a three-run home run, while McRae Cayton and Madison Ellis added solo shots for the Stars. Terry's blast beyond the center-field fence put OCU ahead 4-0 in the second inning.
Jocelin Diaz reached home plate on an error for a 7-3 sixth-inning OCU advantage. Kyndra Holasek nailed a two-run double in the seventh to up OCU's lead to 9-3.
Holasek, a junior from Mustang, Okla., went 1-for-2, scored a run and drove in two runs, while Cayton, a junior from Irvine, Calif., was 1-for-2 with her fifth homer of the year. Ellis, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., scored three times and hit her seventh homer this year. OCU brought its NAIA-high home run total to 62 on the season.
OCU's Maria Gomez stayed unbeaten with her 12th victory of 2015. Gomez, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, went 4.1 innings before giving way to Abby Meador. Meador, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the fifth. Meador went 2.2 innings with three strikeouts to earn her second save.
In the second game, Cayton's two-run base hit keyed a four-run OCU first inning. Kylee Rounsaville hit a sacrifice fly to center, and Jamie Rateliff singled to drive in another run.
The Stars tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Holasek reached home on Diaz' sacrifice bunt, then Diaz scored on Rounsaville's double to left-center. Rateliff had an RBI single to center.
Rateliff brought home OCU's eighth run on a sacrifice fly, then Diaz scored another run on the play on an error.
Terry, a senior from Little Axe, Okla., was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Rateliff, a senior from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs for the Stars. Holasek went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Diaz, a senior from Maracuy, Venezuela, was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Meador fanned eight in 5.1 innings of work to improve to 13-1 on the season.
