OCU prevails over CSU-Pueblo 21-13

Stars suffer 28-14 setback to Nebraska-Kearney, end 8-5 in duals in 2014-15

Aaron LaFarge improved to 31-10 on the season.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University knocked off Colorado State-Pueblo 21-13 after dropping a 28-14 decision to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked 13th in NAIA wrestling, finished the dual season 8-5. Nebraska-Kearney is ranked sixth in NCAA Division II.
Archie Randall completed the 2014-15 season with a 223-90-3 combined men's and women's dual record in his ninth year as Oklahoma City coach. Randall has a 445-106-3 combined college and high school dual record in 34 years coaching.
"Our team is really young," Randall said. "They're getting better every week. I think we can wrestle with anybody in any division."
Against Nebraska-Kearney, OCU trailed 16-14 entering the final two matches of the dual. Kearney's Romero Cotton, ranked No. 1 among NCAA Division II 197-pounders, pinned Miguel Tovar to put the Lopers ahead 22-14.
Derek Sivertsen cut the Stars' deficit to 16-14 in the 184-pound match. Sivertsen, a sophomore from Moore, Okla., won 7-3 over Casey Powell. Sivertsen, ranked seventh in the NAIA, had three takedowns in the victory.
OCU drew to within a point 12-11 after Ricky McCarty rang up a 15-0 technical-fall win. McCarty, a sophomore from Lawton, Okla., piled up four two-point near falls and a three-point near fall in the first period. McCarty finished the match in 3:38 with a second-period takedown.
Adrian Gaines of the Stars pushed Daniel DeShazer, the top-ranked NCAA Division II 133-pounder, before falling 8-6 in the 133-pound bout. Gaines, a sophomore from Lawton, Okla., led 3-1 after two periods. DeShazer rallied with a takedown and two penalty points in the third period.
Gaines grabbed hold of DeShazer's leg in the sudden-victory period, but was not awarded the takedown. Gaines scored an escape to go up 6-5 in the first tiebreaker, but DeShazer responded with a takedown. DeShazer sewed up the win with an escape in the second tiebreaker period.
Aaron LaFarge started OCU off with an 11-5 win in the 125-pound match. LaFarge, a senior from La Habra Heights, Calif., broke a 5-5 tie with an escape in the third period. LaFarge added a takedown with 45 seconds remaining, then posted the two-point near fall and riding time.
At 157, Zach Skates of Oklahoma City used a two-point near fall and takedown in sudden victory to win 5-1 over Chase White. Skates, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., had an escape in the second period, then White tied the match with a third-period escape.
"We wrestled them really tough," Randall said of Nebraska-Kearney. "CSU-Pueblo is always solid. The future for OCU wrestling is bright. We look for great things in the next few years."
Against Colorado State-Pueblo, the Stars dug themselves out of a 7-3 hole with six consecutive wins. Aaron Guery started OCU's rally with a 6-1 win over Dillon Karajanis in the 149-pound contest. Guery grabbed takedowns in the first and third periods.
Skates snagged three takedowns and a two-point near fall to defeat Steven Kelly 9-2 at 157. Skates holds the No. 7 spot in the 157-pound NAIA rankings. At 165, McCarty pulled out a 5-4 win over JaCobi Jones. McCarty picked up two first-period takedowns, then a third-period escape to hang on.
OCU's Jared Bass edged Steven Ullman 3-2 at 174. Bass, a senior from Cushing, Okla., notched a third-period escape. Miguel Tovar won for OCU by the same 3-2 score with a third-period takedown of Riley Argyle at 197. Sivertsen, ranked seventh among NAIA 184-pounders, added a 10-6 victory over Anthony Ball at 184.
