Stars keep Southwestern Christian to 21.1 percent shooting from floor

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University earned a 57-42 victory over Southwestern Christian to begin its Sooner Athletic Conference slate Saturday at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, boosted OCU with 23 points, 19 rebounds and four steals. The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 4-3, 1-0 in the SAC.
OCU's Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., added 16 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. Amanda Ingram, a junior from Oklahoma City, chipped in seven points, four rebounds and three assists for the Stars.
Oklahoma City held Southwestern Christian to a 21.1 percent field-goal percentage as the Lady Eagles hit 15 of their 71 shots.
"This was a great job by our team today following the game plan," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "I thought we took away easy baskets from them. They are a very well-coached team with good shooters."
Kruschke and Wallen brought their double-double total to four each this season. The Stars' Abbey Renner, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., contributed four points and seven rebounds. OCU hauled in 51 rebounds to Southwestern Christian's 36.
"It was a great job by all players rebounding," Overton said. "We knew it was not only Cat and Daniela, but we had to rebound as a team. I thought we did that today."
OCU closed the first half with a 7-0 run to enjoy its biggest advantage of the game at 32-16. Wallen had two buckets to key the run. Kruschke's jumper in the paint gave the Stars a 16-point cushion with 1:27 showing.
Andi McGill's 3-point play just before the end of the third period cut OCU's lead to 40-31. Wallen sparked a 7-1 splurge with back-to-back baskets to push the Stars' lead back into double figures. Kruschke downed a 3 for a 47-32 OCU lead with 7:22 left.
The Stars seized an early 11-3 lead as Ingram tallied five points, while Kruschke had four. Ingram connected on a 3-pointer, then scored in transition to cap an 11-0 OCU run at the 5:06 mark of the first quarter.
Oklahoma City meets Texas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
