Stars triumph over top-10 competition

OCU runs dual record to 6-0 before suffering first loss

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Oklahoma City University notched a 37-7 win over Great Falls (Mont.) and a 20-17 victory over Concordia (Neb.) before falling 30-21 to Montana State-Northern on Friday at the McLaughlin Center.
The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA wrestling, faced all top 10-ranked teams in the Great Falls Battle of the Rockies Duals. Great Falls stands eighth, Concordia is tied for ninth and MSU-Northern holds the fifth spot in the NAIA top 25. Oklahoma City rolled to its finest start in program history at 6-0 before losing to Montana State-Northern.
OCU crushed Great Falls using falls from Matt Landgraff, Ricky McCarty and Cody Sivertsen. Zach Skates chipped in a technical fall, and Jamie Shawver and Miguel Tovar provided major-decision wins.
Landgraff put the Stars in front 6-4 with his fall over Jared Berlinger in 4:04. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., touched off a string of six consecutive OCU wins with a 20-5 triumph over Britton Thompson.
McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., pinned Khaldoon Rashid in 1:47. That bout matched McCarty, the top-ranked defending 165-pound national champion with Rashid, ranked fifth in the NAIA.
Derek Sivertsen of the Stars nudged past Taylor Vaughn 2-1 in a clash of top 10-ranked 184-pounders. Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., took the first-period 1-0 lead with an escape, and Vaughn tied the match 1-1 in the third. Sivertsen, the fourth-ranked 184-pounder, used riding time to secure the win over Vaughn, ranked eighth. Cody Sivertsen of OCU pinned Justin Harbison in 2:17.
Against Concordia, McCarty gave the Stars a 20-4 advantage by cruising past Austin Starkey 16-1 in a match that lasted 2:33. Concordia followed with four wins, but fell short of rallying to tie the dual.
Alvie Killingsworth ignited Oklahoma City with a fall over Jerry Stepps III in 1:42 at 125 pounds. James Landoll of the Stars added a 7-2 victory over Foster Bunce, seventh in the NAIA's 141-pound rankings. Landoll, a junior from Marysville, Kan., holds the No. 16 spot in the rankings.
Against Montana State-Northern, Derek Sivertsen put OCU ahead 21-18 after pinning Dace Fisher in 4:29 at 184. Garrett DeMers and Toby Cheff answered with falls to give MSU-Northern the win.
Skates bested eighth-ranked Tommy Cooper 10-3 in the 157-pound match. Skates, ranked No. 1 at 157, took down Cooper four times. McCarty pinned Austin Blaede in 1:14, and Killingsworth, a senior from Vian, Okla., won by fall in 1:32 over Mhar Caballa.
