OCU topples two ranked foes in Wartburg Desert Duals

Stars defeat No. 18 Wayland Baptist, No. 19 Embry-Riddle

LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma City University racked up a 3-1 record in the Wartburg Desert Duals on Monday at the Flamingo Hotel, knocking off two top 20-ranked opponents.
The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA wrestling, pounded 18th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) 31-12, edged Warner Pacific (Ore.) 26-21 and rolled past 19th-ranked Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 30-12. No. 1-ranked Grand View (Iowa) dealt OCU (9-2) a 40-6 setback.
OCU overcame a 9-6 deficit against Wayland Baptist. The Stars' Zach Skates pinned Brandon Baca in 41 seconds as OCU took the lead for good. OCU rolled to five consecutive wins as Jamie Shawver added a major-decision win and Miguel Tovar won 6-4.
Against Warner Pacific, Cody Sivertsen won by forfeit at 197 pounds to make the difference. Alvie Killingsworth and Parker Bohannan pinned their opponents, while Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., won 19-3 over Michael Feltman at 157 pounds.
OCU's Ricky McCarty suffered his first loss of the season 5-3 to Blake Cooper. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., ran his unbeaten start to 25-0. McCarty is the top-ranked defending national champion at 165 pounds.
The Stars took the final nine matches of the dual against Embry-Riddle. Shawver, a senior from Del City, Okla., put OCU in front 15-12 with a 5-1 win over Taylor Damico in the 165-pound bout. Derek and Cody Sivertsen followed with pins.
In the matchup of the top two-ranked 165-pounders in the NAIA, McCarty knocked off Dallas Houchins of Grand View 5-0. Grand View's Grant Henderson upended Skates, the No. 1-ranked 157-pounder in the NAIA. Henderson entered with the No. 3 ranking. Skates fell to 30-2 on the season. Skates had a 19-0 record before falling in the Great Falls Battle of the Rockies Open on Dec. 5.
The Stars' Derek Sivertsen, ranked fourth at 184, toppled Derrick Hawkins, ranked seventh at 197, 3-1 in the 197-pound match. Oklahoma City has a 5-2 dual record against ranked foes this season.
OCU resumes its season in the Midland Viking-Warrior Open at 9 a.m. Jan. 2 in Fremont, Neb.
