Stars rout Missouri Baptist, Wayland Baptist

OCU sails past top 10-ranked competition

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rolled to a pair of dual victories over Missouri Baptist and Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked third in the Women's College Wrestling Association, prevailed 34-12 over ninth-ranked Missouri Baptist. OCU (13-4) also picked up a 30-16 win over eighth-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas).
Against Wayland Baptist, Yvonne Galindo of OCU upended Valerie Rosales by fall in 2:28. Galindo, a junior from El Paso, Texas, held the fifth spot in the preseason 155-pound WCWA ratings, while Rosales was second.
Galindo accounted for one of four pins the Stars stuck against Wayland Baptist. OCU's Shelby Morrison opened the dual with a 37-second pin of Leah Olguin in the 116-pound bout, then Rachel Archer finished off Jathiya Isaac in 2:45.
Galindo's fall gave OCU a 25-3 advantage. Wayland Baptist followed with three wins by pin, decision and forfeit to shrink OCU's lead to 25-16.
The Stars' Cody Pfau closed out the dual by pinning Ariana Anthony in 37 seconds at 109. Pfau, a junior from Parachute, Colo., is the top-ranked defending national champion at her weight.
Against Missouri Baptist, Rachael Butler, Rachel Young and Tatiana Vazquez from OCU racked up falls. Butler, a freshman from Pleasanton, Calif., ended her 143-pound match against Berenice Blanco in 2:47. Young, a senior from Whitehall, Ohio, took out Marki Simmons in 1:52.
Vazquez, a sophomore from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., pinned Aylin Hernandez in 1:25. Morrison, a senior from Amarillo, Texas, and Monica Mason, a freshman from Marion, N.Y., earned technical-fall wins.
The Stars compete in the Bill Farrell Invitational this weekend in Hempstead, N.Y., before resuming their dual season against Lyon (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Nov. 12 at Abe Lemons Arena.
