OCU breezes to victories over Missouri Baptist, Wayland Baptist

Stars improve to 2-0 in duals in 2015-16

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University cruised past Missouri Baptist 39-4 and Wayland Baptist (Texas) 37-3 in its first men's wrestling duals of the season Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked second in the NAIA, posted three technical falls against Missouri Baptist. Korey Walker punctuated OCU's victory over 19th-ranked Wayland Baptist with a fall.
Ricky McCarty, the top-ranked defending 165-pound NAIA champion, recorded four first-period near falls on Larry Prade of Missouri Baptist. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., notched two four-point near falls on the way to the 16-0 technical-fall win.
Zach Skates piled up seven takedowns against Missouri Baptist's Matt Behr in his 16-5 major-decision victory. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., holds the No. 1 ranking among NAIA 157-pounders.
Alvie Killingsworth of the Stars accumulated three near falls, including a four-pointer, in the first period of his 17-1 victory over Demarcus Gurlly at 125.
Against Wayland Baptist, Killingsworth, McCarty and Skates rolled to technical-fall wins. Killingsworth, a senior from Vian, Okla., put Trent Mills to his back for three four-point near falls in gaining a 17-0 win.
Skates amassed seven takedowns and a four-point near fall in a 21-6 victory over Victor Thomas.
McCarty had four near falls, three of which were four-pointers, in defeating Brian O'Shaughnessy 17-0.
Jamie Shawver knocked off Tommy Rosen-St. John 8-3 to put the Stars ahead 28-0. Shawver, a senior from Del City, Okla., sits 11th in the NAIA 174-pound ratings.
Mitch Napier broke up the shutout for Wayland Baptist. Napier, ranked 16th among NAIA 184-pounders, toppled top-ranked Derek Sivertsen 14-10. Napier had a four-point near fall to open the scoring. Sivertsen cut his deficit to 12-10 with a takedown in the final 30 seconds, but didn't complete a near fall attempt. Napier clinched the win with a reversal.
Walker, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., stuck the Stars' lone fall of the night in 1:40 over Isaiah Olugbemi.
OCU wrestles in the Bethany Swede Open at 9 a.m. Saturday in Lindsborg, Kan.
