Stars survive against John Brown 71-69

OCU remains undefeated in conference

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University's Yvonte Neal converted a layup with 23 seconds remaining to seal the 71-69 victory over John Brown (Ark.) on Thursday at Bill George Arena.
Rateska Brown, a senior from Alvin, S.C., led the Stars with 22 points while knocking down four 3-pointers. The Stars, ranked second in NAIA women's basketball, improved to 14-1, 9-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa was one rebound shy of a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Neal, a senior from Spring Valley, Calif., was also a rebound shy of a double-double scoring 16 points and nine rebounds.
In the first half the Stars trailed 18-15 with 13:38 left before reeling off a 20-3 run to take the game's largest lead at 14 with 7:32 remaining in the period. OCU did not score another field goal in the half and took a 43-37 lead into halftime.
John Brown tied the game with 8:58 to play and did not trail again until 32 seconds remained. After that point, the game was tied three times and JBU led by four twice, the last time with 3:15 on the clock.
With 51 seconds left, OCU's Marisha Wallace converted the front end of two free-throw tries to tie the game. Her second attempt hit off the back of the rim, and Coulibaly pulled down the offensive rebound to give the Stars more life.
Yvonte Neal received the ball at the top of the key, got around her defender on the left side and elevated around secondary defenders to kiss the ball off the glass and in with 23 seconds to go. JBU failed to get a clean shot off as time expired to give the Stars the victory.
OCU continues conference play against Texas Wesleyan 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
