Stars sweep Bacone, Wayland Baptist

OCU improves to 8-9 in duals

Cody Sivertsen notched a pair of pins against Bacone and Wayland Baptist.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University toppled Wayland Baptist (Texas) 26-15 before pounding Bacone 37-9 Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU, ranked No. 12 in NAIA wrestling, got two pins apiece from senior Teagan Franco and junior Cody Sivertsen and rolled to a pair wins to improve to 8-9 on the season.
Freshman Adrian Gaines, of Lawton, Okla. picked up a 17-9 major decision at 125 pounds to give OCU an early lead over Wayland Baptist.
After the Pioneers won at 133 and 141, Ricky McCarty, a freshman from Lawton, Okla., earned a 5-0 decision at 149.
Sophomore Zach Skates, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and senior Hunter Muskrat, of Stillwell, Okla., followed with back-to-back victories at 157 and 165 to give the Stars a 14-6 lead.
Wayland Baptist cut the lead to 14-9 with a win at 174, but Sivertsen, of Moore, Okla., and Franco, of Spanaway, Wash., notched back-to-back pins at 184 and 197 to give OCU the 26-15 victory.
James Landoll, a freshman from Marysville, Kan., pinned Bacone's Ian Ortega at 141 to give OCU a 9-3 advantage.
McCarty and Skates followed with back-to-back technical falls at 149 and 157 to stretch the Stars' advantage to 19-3.
Muskrat earned a 10-5 decision at 165 and sophomore Jamie Shawver, of Del City, Okla., picked up a 2-0 decision at 174 to give OCU a commanding 25-3 lead.
Sivertsen and Franco slammed the door on the Warriors with back-to-back pins at 184 and 197 and handed OCU the 37-9 victory.
The Stars will return to action in the NAIA Central Qualifying Group Tournament at 9 a.m. Feb. 22 in Marshall, Mo.
