Wayland Baptist trips up Stars 88-77

OCU winning streak over at seven

Yvonte Neal topped OCU in scoring for eighth time this season.

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University suffered an 88-77 setback to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday at the Hutcherson Center.
Yvonte Neal led OCU with 14 points, but Wayland Baptist's Angeleigh Davis had 38 points. The Stars, ranked sixth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, fell to 16-3, 13-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Neal, a junior from Spring Valley, Calif., added five rebounds, three assists and three steals. OCU had five double-figure scorers. Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a junior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, tallied 13 points, while Autumn Lau, a senior from Mount Wolf, Pa., contributed 13 points and six rebounds for the Stars.
OCU's Cara Pugh added 12 points and three 3-pointers, and Kayla MacKenzie had 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Wayland Baptist halted OCU's seven-game winning streak. OCU shot a season-low 34.7 percent from the field. The Stars managed under 40 percent shooting for the fourth time this season.
Markeisha Johnson scored on a transition bucket to give the Stars a 13-3 advantage with 15:58 to go in the first half. Wayland Baptist came back as Davis' lay-in put her team up 18-17 with 11:15 left in the first.
Coulibaly had a layup to put OCU in front 29-28 at the 4:20 mark of the first. That proved to be the Stars' final lead of the game.
Davis' layup capped a 7-1 Wayland Baptist run that increased the Flying Queens' lead to 36-30 with 2:02 left in the half. Stephanie Afungo's free throws stretched Wayland Baptist's lead to 42-32 just before halftime.
The Stars cut Wayland Baptist's lead to eight points on three occasions in the second period. Autumn Lau downed free throws that sliced OCU's deficit to 55-47 with 14:21 left. McKenzie's layup trimmed Wayland Baptist's advantage to 84-75 with 26 seconds showing.
OCU takes on St. Gregory's at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
