Stars squeak past Mid-America Christian

OCU advances to second round of SAC Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University advanced to the second round of the Sooner Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament with a 2-1 win over Mid-America Christian on Saturday night at Stars Field.
Jeffrey Matthews scored the game winner for the Stars. OCU improved to 9-4-2.
Mid-America got on the scoreboard first. Devin Theisen found the back of the net on a pass from Danny Hernandez in the 21st minute. Mid-America took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
OCU had opportunities but were unable to capitalize until the 71st minute. Ruy Vaz, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was able to break down defenders inside the 18-yard box and beat the keeper to tie the game.
Matthews, a freshman from Dallas, put the Stars ahead for good in the 86th minute. Logan Stewart, a freshman from Denton, Texas, took on defenders on the right side of the field and sent in a cross inside the box. Matthews got just enough of his head on the ball to hit the crossbar and go in the goal, his second score of the season.
Vladimir Kalajdzic, a freshman from Novi Sad, Serbia, collected six saves for the Stars in the win.
OCU hosts Texas Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stars Field in the SAC Tournament semifinals.
