OCU blasts Bacone 34-9

Bass, McCarty provide Stars with pins

Jared Bass is ranked 11th among NAIA 174-pounders.

MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Oklahoma City University cruised past Bacone 34-9 on Wednesday at the Palmer Center.
Ricky McCarty and Jared Bass punctuated the OCU win with falls at 165 pounds and 174. The Stars, ranked 12th in NAIA wrestling, moved to 3-2 in duals.
OCU erased a 9-7 deficit by taking the final five matches of the dual. McCarty, a sophomore from Lawton, Okla., pinned Tyler Logan in 1:47. McCarty moved up to sixth in the latest 165-pound NAIA rankings.
Bass, a senior from Cushing, Okla., finished off Eric Strocen in 2:14 in the 174-pound bout. Bass holds the No. 11 spot in his weight class' national rankings.
At 141, James Landoll pounded Abel Villamoreno 17-4 to give the Stars a 10-9 edge in the dual score. Brok Williams' 11-0 waxing of Preston Steen put OCU ahead 14-9 after the 149-pound match.
OCU's Zach Skates stomped Steven Melara 21-5, finishing the match with 1.5 seconds remaining. Skates, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., sits fourth in the last 157-pound rankings.
The Stars' Aaron LaFarge also blanked Erik Gonzalez 17-0 in the 125-pound match. LaFarge, a senior from La Habra Heights, Calif., held the third slot in the ratings at his weight.
Derek Sivertsen knocked off Jose Hernandez in the 197-pound contest 7-3. Sivertsen, a sophomore from Moore, Okla., has the ninth spot in the 184-pound rankings.
Oklahoma City wrestles again in the King Open at 8 a.m. CDT Sunday in Bristol, Tenn.
