Stars fall short in OCU Duals championship

No. 1-ranked King wins dual tournament

Cody Pfau, ranked No. 1 at 109 pounds, pinned all three of her opponents Saturday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took runner-up in the Oklahoma City Cliff Keen Duals after falling 27-20 to King (Tenn.) on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked second in the Women's College Wrestling Association, went to 15-2. Top-ranked King has hung both losses on OCU this season.
OCU's other victories Saturday came against fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) 42-4 and 34-12 over third-ranked Lindenwood (Mo.).
Oklahoma City suffered a 32-13 setback to King on Oct. 11 in the Cumberlands Duals.
"We got closer to King, and we have three starters out," OCU coach Archie Randall said. "Our younger girls are closer. They're not at that level yet, but they'll get there. It's important on our journey to the national championship that we win at the end, not at the beginning. In the beginning, we find out our mistakes, we correct and move on. Our girls are really excited about the next time we face King. They're very confident we can overturn this loss. I am too."
In the championship dual, the Stars led 13-7 over defending national champion King once Cody Pfau pinned Breonah Neal in 56 seconds in the 109-pound bout. Heather O'Connor at 191 pounds and Emily Webster at 101 had provided the Stars with technical-fall wins.
King answered with victories in the next five matches. OCU's Kayla Aggio won by fall over Lorrie Ramos in 5:57 for the final margin.
"I'm looking for a promising season," Randall said. "I'm really excited. Sometimes when you lose, you look to what the future is, and our future is really good."
Aggio, a junior from Rohnert Park, Calif., completed the weekend with pins in all eight of her matches. Aggio, ranked third nationally at 143 pounds, posted the fall against ninth-ranked Shamera McTier of Life (Ga.) in 1:35 on Friday.
Pfau, a sophomore from Parachute, Colo., added falls in all three of her matches Saturday. Pfau, the top-ranked 109-pounder in the WCWA, recorded seven pins in the OCU Duals. Neal is the No. 2-rated 109-pounder.
Against Wayland Baptist, Carla Ponce picked up the fall at 130 pounds. O'Connor, Webster, Shelby Morrison and Rachel Archer won in technical falls.
In the Lindenwood dual, Morrison pinned Hannah Padilla in 53 seconds at 116. O'Connor and Sherese Thomas had technical-fall victories. Archer, a sophomore from Winlock, Wash., toppled the third-ranked 123-pounder, Diaysha Moore, 8-8.
OCU competes next in the Jamestown Duals on Friday in Jamestown, N.D.
