OCU suffers 22-15 setback to New Mexico Highlands

Stars take four matches, build 12-7 lead

Zach Skates is ranked fifth among NAIA 157-pounders.

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Oklahoma City University's Zach Skates struck for a fall, but the Stars fell 22-15 to New Mexico Highlands on Friday at Robertson High School.
James Landoll, Ricky McCarty and Teagan Franco added victories for OCU. The Stars, ranked 12th in NAIA wrestling, went to 6-9 in duals.
Landoll, a freshman from Marysville, Kan., edged Dan Gaylor 3-2 in overtime in the 141-pound match to get OCU on the scoreboard. McCarty, a freshman from Lawton, Okla., won the 149-pound bout 7-2 over Pierce Stowman. McCarty is ranked 10th among NAIA 149-pounders.
Skates, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., pinned Jesse Martinez in 4:02 at 157. Skates, ranked third at 157, put the Stars in front 12-7.
Franco, a senior from Spanaway, Wash., won 3-1 over Justin Rockhill in overtime at 197. OCU trailed 16-15 before forfeiting at 285 pounds.
The Stars host Bacone and Wayland Baptist (Texas) in their 2013-14 regular-season finale Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena. Bacone faces Wayland Baptist at 5 p.m., followed by a dual featuring OCU vs. Wayland Baptist at 6:30. OCU takes on Bacone at 8.
