OCU rolls past Southwestern Assemblies of God 77-47

Stars win fourth straight, improve to 10-1 in SAC

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University outmuscled Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 77-47 Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 7 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, outrebounded the Lady Lions 47-29 and scored 19 second-chance points to pick up the win and improve to 13-2 overall and 10-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
"One of the things I was pleased with was our defense," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. "One of our goals this season is to hold teams to less than 50 points, so I was happy with the defensive effort."
The Stars started the game on a 10-0 run. OCU forced four SAGU turnovers and scored six of its first 10 points in the paint.
The Lady Lions responded with a bucket from Shaquita Roberts and 3-pointer from Jirah Rodriguez and cut the OCU lead to 10-5 at the 15:41 mark of the half.
Cara Pugh hit a 3-point jumper at the 1:35 mark to give OCU its largest lead of the half at 34-22.
SAGU scored the final four points of the half and cut the Stars' lead to 34-26 at halftime.
OCU shot 42 percent from the field and scored 11 points off turnovers in the first half. Both sides coughed up 12 turnovers in the period.
The Stars opened the second half on an 11-3 run and ballooned their lead to 45-29 with 14:12 remaining. Kayla MacKenzie helped fuel the run with four points.
Pugh followed with back-to-back-to-back triples for OCU and handed the Stars a 51-32 advantage at the 11:18 mark of the second half.
With 6:11 remaining in the contest, MacKenzie hit from 3-point distance and Pugh followed with another triple to spark OCU to 17-4 run to finish the game.
Autumn Lau forced a turnover and scored in transition with 56 seconds left and gave the Stars the 77-47 victory.
OCU scored 23 points off 23 forced turnovers and outscored SAGU 38-12 in bench scoring and 26-16 in points in the paint on the night.
Pugh paced the Stars with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. Pugh has hit six or more triples in two of the Stars' last three games.
Lau followed with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double. MacKenzie added 16 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals, and Ouleymatou Coulibaly chipped in with 17 rebounds and eight points.
The Stars will return to action against Northwood (Texas) at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Nutting Arena Building in Cedar Hill, Texas.
