OCU takes third in NWCA National Duals

Stars pick up 36-8 win over Wayland Baptist

Cody Pfau pinned two opponents Sunday.
DES MOINES, Iowa – Oklahoma City University finished third place in the NWCA National Duals with a 36-8 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Sunday at the Hyvee Arena.
The Stars, ranked third in the Women's College Wrestling Association, went into the consolation bracket after falling to second-ranked Simon Fraser (British Columbia) 27-17.
In the third-place dual, Cody Pfau, Brieana Delgado and Rachel McFarland each scored falls to stake OCU to a 22-1 advantage over fourth-ranked Wayland Baptist. Demi Strub and Heather O'Connor tacked on pins for the Stars (10-2 in duals).
Kristi Garr added a technical-fall victory for OCU. In the 101-pound match, OCU's Emily Webster clipped Vanessa Smith 14-12 in a matchup of two of the top three ranked wrestlers at the weight. Webster, a junior from Sedalia, Mo., stands atop the rankings, while Smith is ranked third.
Simon Fraser overcame OCU's 12-6 lead through the 123-pound match. Webster jumpstarted OCU with a 14-4 victory over 101-pound victory against second-ranked Darby Huckle.
Pfau, a freshman from Parachute, Colo., pinned Simon Fraser's Nikkie Brar in 2:16 at 109. Pfau is ranked second at 109 pounds, while Brar is ranked third at 116. Delgado, a junior from Fountain Inn, S.C., knocked off Laura Anderson 4-3 to provide the Stars a 12-6 lead.
Stephanie Geltmacher prevailed 5-0 in the 155-pound bout to give OCU its only victory in the final seven matches of the dual. Justina DiStasio and Jenna McLatchy supplied the Stars with pins to finish the dual.
OCU will compete in the WCWA Championships on Jan. 23-25 in St. Louis. The Stars own national championships won in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
