Stars fall to Incarnate Word 8-3, 6-4

OCU dropped both ends of the double dip to move to 24-6 on the season

SAN ANTONIO – Oklahoma City University dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Incarnate Word (Texas) 8-3 and 6-4 Tuesday at Cardinals Field.
The losses move the Stars, ranked No. 9 in NAIA softball, to 24-6 on the season. OCU entered the twin bill with an 18-game win streak.
Incarnate Word pushed runs across in the bottom of the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
LeeAnn Lopez put the Stars on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with a single up the middle to drive in Shelbi Legg and make the score 2-1. Later in the inning, Drew Wright doubled to right-center field and picked up a pair of RBIs to give OCU a 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals responded with a six-run bottom of the fifth and took the 8-3 victory.
Elizabeth Oberst tossed six innings and recorded five strikeouts but was saddled with the loss and moved to 15-3 on the season.
Wright went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs to lead OCU at the dish.
OCU jumped out to an early lead when Wright singled to plate Tori Joyner and make the score 1-0 in the top of the first.
After the Cardinals tied the score in the bottom of the second, Kyndra Holasek tripled and plated a run to break the tie in the top of the third. Later in the inning, Lopez drove in Holasek and gave the Stars a 3-1 lead.
Magean De La Torre singled up the middle in the top of the fifth to score Wright and stretch the OCU lead to 4-2.
Incarnate Word answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and the 6-4 victory.
Jamie Rateliff allowed three runs in six innings of work. Oberst allowed three runs in relief.
De La Torre, Holasek, Lopez and Wright each drove in a run to lead the Stars at the plate.
OCU will return to action in a noon doubleheader against Texas A&M International Thursday in Laredo, Texas.
