Defending national champion Stars fall 59-48 to Lee

OCU finish season 28-4 in its 14th trip to NAIA's Elite Eight

 
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Oklahoma City University bowed out of the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament after a 59-48 loss to Lee (Tenn.) on Saturday at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Second-ranked OCU (28-4) finished its postseason run by making its 14th all-time appearance in the NAIA Tournament quarterfinals in 19 tournament appearances. Seventh-ranked Lee upended the defending national champion Stars to get to the tournament semifinals.
Katie Hall, a senior from Hazelton, Idaho, posted 24 points and nine rebounds for OCU. Hall sank 8 for 14 shots from the field. Lauren Gober, a senior from Newcastle, Okla., added nine points and 10 rebounds. Gober dropped in two 3-pointers. Gober hit the 300th trey of her OCU career with 14:20 remaining in the game.  
Lee (33-2) scored the game's first eight points. Myriah Iles sank two free throws and a basket to tally Lee's first four points.
OCU rallied the tie the game 13-13 with a 3-point play by Hall. Lee answered with six points in a row as Hollie German's 3 put Lee up 19-13 at 5:46 left in the first half.
Jenna Adams had a basket to give Lee its greatest lead of the game 36-23 with 15:15 to go. The Stars made a push to cut their deficit to three points.
OCU put together an 11-2 run as Gober sank a trey to slice Lee's cushion to 48-45 with 2:39 showing on the clock. Hall added two field goals and four free throws to compile the Stars' other eight points of their surge.
German's free throws increased Lee's advantage back into double digits at 57-47 with 32 seconds left.
Lee snapped the Stars' seven-game win streak in national-tournament play. Six-time national champion OCU has a 56-13 record in the NAIA Tournament.
OCU captured its 14th Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season championship and advanced to the SAC Tournament title game for the 12th time during Latricia Trammell's first season as Stars coach. The Stars reeled off a 25-game, extended their winning streak against NAIA competition to 47 and recorded the program's streak of 20-win seasons to 15.
Five seniors played their final game for OCU – Gober, Hall, Ravven Brown, Desiree Jeffries and Jessica Lankston. Those seniors played a part in OCU in going 122-13 the past four years with four SAC regular-season championships, two SAC Tournament crowns, two trips to the NAIA Tournament quarterfinals, a national-tournament semifinal appearance and the 2012 national championship.
Brown provided the Stars with a spark off the bench after joining OCU as a senior from North Texas. She scored a season-high 17 points against USAO on Feb. 7, reached double figures in scoring eight times, made five starts and ranked 10th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.07-to-1) this season. Brown, a criminal justice major from Duluth, Ga., is the granddaughter of Jean Brown.
Gober will go down as one of the most prolific scorers OCU has ever had. A four-year starter, she has been awarded SAC freshman of the year, all-tournament in the NAIA Tournament, NAIA scholar-athlete, CoSIDA academic all-district twice and all-American, SAC player of the week twice, all-conference four times and all-American twice. In her OCU career, she compiled 1,687 points, 716 rebounds, 164 assists, 240 steals and 94 blocks while becoming OCU's all-time leading 3-point shooter with 301 3s. Gober is a nursing major and the daughter of Ed and Teresa Gober.
Hall's calling card was her rugged play inside the paint. She ranked fourth in the NAIA with 4.8 offensive rebounds a game while earning SAC player of the week this season. In her college career, she accumulated 1,327 points and 1,119 rebounds. Hall is a psychology major and the daughter of Rick and Holly Hall.
Jeffries showcased a myriad of talents from game to game for the Stars. She has been honored as SAC player of the week twice, all-tournament in the SAC Tournament twice and all-conference three times. Her career numbers were 1,049 points, 539 rebounds, 321 assists, 166 steals and 57 blocked shots at OCU. Jeffries is a criminal justice major from Oklahoma City and the daughter of Ronda Hodge.
Lankston became known for her hustle and outstanding floor game in her senior year with the Stars. She scored a season-high 22 points against Central Christian on Nov. 24 and ranked 16th in the NAIA with a 1.89-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Lankston is a kinesiology major from Kansas, Okla., and the daughter of Todd and Lisa Lankston.
