SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University advanced to the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament championship game with a 58-34 victory over John Brown (Ark.) on Friday at the Noble Complex.
Desiree Jeffries, a senior from Oklahoma City, scored 14 points to lead OCU and bring her career total as a Star to 1,003 points. The Stars (26-2) made the SAC Tournament title game for the 12th time in 13 years.
Jeffries added six rebounds and four assists while hitting 7 of her 11 shots from the field. Kayla MacKenzie, a junior from Peoria, Ariz., posted 10 points and five rebounds while nailing two 3-pointers for the Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I.
Lauren Gober and Katie Hall contributed seven points each for OCU. Hall pulled down eight rebounds as OCU had a 44-30 rebounding advantage.
The Stars will seek their 10th SAC Tournament crown against fourth-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 4 p.m. Saturday.
OCU held John Brown to 20.9 percent shooting from the floor (9-for-43) and 17.4 percent in the second half (4-for-23). OCU swiped 15 steals as John Brown committed 23 turnovers, which the Stars scored 26 points off of.
“I was very pleased with our defense,” OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. “We had a lot more effort in today's game on both ends of the floor. Desiree really stepped up for our team offensively and gave her teammates energy with her determination. Going into tomorrow's championship game, we need to focus on the little things that have carried us through this far.”
OCU led from start to finish, building a 30-point advantage at one point. Jeffries' jumper in the paint capped a 9-0 OCU run and provided the Stars a 55-25 lead with 5:27 left in the game.
The Stars led 22-8 early after a 7-0 OCU splurge. Jeffries sank a putback that gave OCU an early 14-point cushion at the 6:17 mark of the first period.
OCU boasts of three 1,000-point scorers on its current squad. Gober, a senior from Newcastle, Okla., bumped her career total to 1,643 points, while Hall, a senior from Hazelton, Idaho, increased her point total to 1,300 points Friday. Hall transferred to OCU to follow Trammell from Western State (Colo.), where Hall totaled 944 points.
