Box Score
SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University ousted Mid-America Christian 80-47 on Thursday at the Noble Complex in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament quarterfinals.
Katie Hall, a senior from Hazelton, Idaho, propelled the Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I, with 20 points. OCU posted its 15th consecutive 25-win season, improving to 25-2. The Stars meet John Brown (Ark.) at 3 p.m. Friday in the tournament semifinals.
Hall shot 9-for-13 from the field and grabbed five rebounds and two steals. Desiree Jeffries, a senior from Oklahoma City, collected 12 points, six rebounds and three steals for OCU. Lauren Gober and Autumn Huffman each scored nine points.
The Stars built an early 19-3 advantage as Hall tallied eight points.
Mid-America Christian misfired on its first eight shot attempts from the field and committed 12 turnovers through 12 minutes of play. April Williams hit a 3-pointer for Mid-America's first basket with 8:00 left in the first half.
“Our defense in the first half was much better than in the second half,” OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. “We had too many individual breakdowns on defense. We needed to be more consistent on both ends of the floor throughout the game.”
OCU outrebounded Mid-America Christian 44-30. Mid-America struggled to 32.5 percent shooting from the field (13-for-40) and shot 21.1 percent from the floor in the first half (4-for-19).
The Stars built whopping advantages in points in the paint (52-6), points off turnovers (24-4), second-chance points (26-12) and bench points (18-0). The Stars pocketed 17 steals as Mid-America Christian turned the ball over 27 times.
OCU shot 50 percent (18-for-36) in the second half, finishing at 41.7 percent from the floor. The Stars won going away as the final margin was OCU's largest lead of the game.
“We were pleased with the effort and teamwork they displayed,” Trammell said. “We need to make sure we come out tomorrow and strive for perfection for 40 minutes.”
