OCU routs Oklahoma Baptist 70-38

Stars limit OBU to 22 percent shooting

Kayla MacKenzie turned in 19 points, five rebounds and three steals while nailing three 3-pointers Thursday.

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University crushed Oklahoma Baptist 70-38 on Thursday at the Noble Complex.
Kayla MacKenzie, a junior from Peoria, Ariz., posted a game-high 19 points for the Stars. OCU, ranked second in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 23-2, 15-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Stars have won 22 in a row.
MacKenzie sank three 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds and three steals. Jessica Lankston, a senior from Kansas, Okla., contributed 11 points for OCU.
Katie Hall, a senior from Hazelton, Idaho, increased her team-high double-double total to 12. Hall supplied the Stars with 10 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.
“I enjoyed our effort,” OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. “We had a complete team effort. Our defense, everyone did an excellent job.”
Oklahoma Baptist (14-12, 7-8 SAC) struggled to 22 percent shooting from the floor while committing 23 turnovers. OCU pocketed 13 steals.
The Stars grew their lead to 37 points with 1:32 to go in the game. OCU owned a 56-38 rebounding advantage.
“Rebounding was something we really stressed at halftime,” Trammell said. “We did a better job in the second half.”
Oklahoma Baptist went scoreless for 9:07 during the first half. During that time, OCU increased its lead from 24-14 to 36-14. Ravven Brown capped the 12-0 Stars run with a pair of free throws at the 1:21 mark of the first half. Aremi free throws broke OBU's drought with 59 seconds left in the first.
Lankston tallied 11 points while OCU built a 19-10 early lead. Lankston hit all four of her first-half shots from the field and nailed two 3-pointers. Lankston had a 3-point play and added another bucket for the 19-10 Stars advantage with 12:23 to go in the first.
OCU closes the regular season vs. Rogers State at 3 p.m. Saturday in Claremore, Okla.
