OCU wallops Cumberland 23-12

Stars notches third win against ranked competition in 2013-14

Zach Skates went 2-1 on Saturday.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oklahoma City University upended Cumberland (Tenn.) 23-12 as part of a 1-3 performance against top 20-ranked competition Saturday at the Warrior Athletic Center in the Indiana Tech Duals.
The Stars, ranked 19th in NAIA wrestling, beat eighth-ranked Cumberland, but fell to fourth-rated Campbellsville (Ky.) 39-17, No. 6 Great Falls (Mont.) 42-6 and 11th-ranked Indiana Tech 30-9. OCU moved to 4-4 in duals.
Against Cumberland, Zach Skates of OCU prevailed in a matchup of top 10-ranked 165-pounders. Skates, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., won 16-2 in a major decision over Kirk Johnson. Skates is ranked No. 4, while Johnson holds the No. 10 spot. The Stars led 16-6 after Skates' victory.
Jared Bass put OCU in front 20-6 using an 8-0 win at 174 pounds. Bass knocked off Jacob Shirley, ranked 13th in the NAIA 174-pound ratings. Bass finished off a run of four Stars victories.
OCU's Ricky McCarty defeated Nate Croley 6-0 in the 149-pound bout, while Hunter Muskrat overwhelmed Gary Shockley 16-0 at 157.
Adrian Gaines staked OCU to an early 4-0 lead with an 18-4 win at 125. Cody Sivertsen put the Stars ahead 23-9 by edging Scott Stewart 3-2.
Against Campbellsville, Gaines and Destin Theus had falls for OCU. Skates contributed a technical fall.
McCarty, Muskrat and Cody Sivertsen posted wins vs. Indiana Tech.
OCU wrestles next in the Reno Tournament of Champions at 11 a.m. CST Dec. 22 in Reno, Nev.
