OCU squeaks by Wayland Baptist 22-21

18th-ranked Stars knock off 15th-ranked Wayland Baptist

Adrian Gaines holds the No. 16 spot in the NAIA's 125-pound rankings.

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Adrian Gaines' win at 125 pounds brought Oklahoma City University a 22-21 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Wednesday at the Hutcherson Center in a clash of top 20-ranked teams in NAIA wrestling.
Gaines, a freshman from Lawton, Okla., scraped past Justin Williamson 10-7 to put the Stars ahead 22-17. Travon Smith avoided getting pinned at 133 to help OCU put away the win. The 18th-ranked Stars improved to 1-1, while 15th-ranked Wayland Baptist fell to 0-2.
Among NAIA 125-pounders, Gaines grabbed the No. 16 ranking in ratings released Wednesday. Smith fell to Andrew Porras 14-3 in the last bout of the dual.
Ricky McCarty and Zach Skates supplied OCU with technical-fall wins. McCarty, a freshman from Lawton, Okla., defeated Victor Thomas 13-1 at 149 pounds to tie the dual 5-5.
Skates, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., pounded Wyatt Hardy 23-7 in the 165-pound contest. OCU went ahead 16-5 with the win. Skates held the fifth spot in his weight's rankings.
Wayland Baptist's Mich Napier won at 184 to cut OCU's lead to 16-14. Cody Sivertsen responded by edging Cody Lindberg 2-1 using riding time at 197. Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., provided the Stars with a 19-14 edge. Sivertsen is eighth among NAIA 197-pounders.
Hunter Muskrat took a win by forfeit for OCU at 157.
The Stars compete in the Shorter Open at 8 a.m. CST Saturday in Rome, Ga.
