John Brown edges Stars 3-1 in penalty shootout

Stars play to 1-1 draw with Golden Eagles in SAC Tournament title match

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University played to a 1-1 draw with John Brown (Ark.) but fell 3-1 in a penalty shootout in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship game Friday at Stars Field.
The Stars, ranked No. 18 in NAIA women's soccer, got a goal late in the first half from Makayla Braun to tie the match at 1-1 but could not find the back of the net again in regulation or overtime. The Golden Eagles converted three of their four penalty kick chances to edge OCU in the penalty shootout.
John Brown took a first-half lead when Casey O'Brien took a long pass from Sara Lachance and found the back of the net in the 19th minute to make the score 1-0.
OCU leveled the match at 1-1 in the 44th minute when Kailea Atkins connected with Braun on long pass into the box. Braun headed the ball past John Brown goalkeeper Kristen Morency and scored her seventh goal of the season.
OCU goalkeeper Ashley Bechtold made saves in the 62nd, 74th, 82nd and 90th minutes of the second half to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard.
Allie Glazner and Allison Worsham each put shots on target in the second half, but Morency stopped both attempts to send the match to overtime.
In the first overtime period, Meghan McMahon took a shot that deflected off the goalpost in the 92nd minute.
The second overtime period ended with a score of 1-1 and the matched went to a penalty shootout.
John Brown held the Stars to 1-for-4 in the penalty shootout and took the SAC Tournament championship.
OCU, now 15-4-1 overall, could still earn an at-large bid and advance to the NAIA Championship Opening Round on Nov. 23. The NAIA Championship Opening Round field will be announced at 7 p.m. Sunday, and the official bracket will be released at 2 p.m. Monday.
