Stars smash John Brown 73-45

OCU scored 46 points in the paint to pick up their first SAC victory

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University pounded John Brown (Ark.) 73-45 Thursday at Bill George Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 8 in NAIA Division I, outscored the Lady Eagles 46-14 in the paint and earned their first Sooner Athletic Conference victory to improve to 9-2 overall.
OCU imposed its will early and started the game on a 9-2 run. The Stars scored seven of their first nine points in the paint and led by seven with 13 minutes and 51 seconds to play in the first half.
Cara Pugh scored on the fastbreak and Lauren Gober followed with a 3-point jumper at the 9:43 mark to spark a 13-5 OCU run. Gober picked up an offensive rebound and scored to cap the run and give the Stars a 29-11 lead with 5:57 remaining.
Pugh, Ravven Brown and Katie Hall scored back-to-back-to-back buckets in the paint to close the half and give OCU a 37-21 lead at halftime.
OCU forced 13 first-half turnovers while holding John Brown to 35 percent shooting from the field. The Stars shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half.
OCU outscore John Brown 17-6 in the first eight minutes of the second half. Pugh scored six and Hall added four to push the Stars to a 54-27 lead with 12:13 to go in the game.
The Stars continued to dominate in the paint, scoring 14 of their last 19 points in the lane, and took the 73-45 victory.
OCU scored 46 points in the paint and 21 points off turnovers. The Stars outrebounded John Brown 39-27 and notched 13 second chance points.
The Stars held the Lady Eagles to 27 percent shooting from behind the 3-point line and forced 23 turnovers on the game.
Hall led the Stars with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds. The 6-foot center from Hazleton, Idaho, snagged eight offensive rebounds and tallied four steals on the game. Pugh followed with a season-high 15 points and Gober added 13 points and nine boards.
OCU will return to action against USAO at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
