OCU ousted from NWCA National Duals

Stars goes 1-2 in tournament against ranked competition

Mark Meyer increased his OCU career record to 64 falls.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri Valley knocked Oklahoma City University out of the NWCA National Duals 22-18 on Saturday at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.
OCU opened the tournament with a 23-18 win over Midland (Neb.) before falling into the consolation bracket after a 19-15 setback to Great Falls (Mont.). The Stars (5-6) are ranked sixth in NAIA wrestling.
Against 17th-rated Midland, Mark Meyer evened the dual 12-12 with his 64th career fall to extend his OCU record. Meyer, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., pinned Tyler McMichael in 6:17.
Zach Skates' 16-4 victory over Shawn Keating and Teagan Franco's 9-7 win over Connor Hovey provided the Stars a 19-12 edge in the dual. At 197 pounds, Michael Brown clinched the dual with a 17-4 triumph over Dustin Brunner, putting OCU ahead 23-15.
Kidd Gomez started OCU off with a fall over Aspen Kmiec in 3:53.
Against third-ranked Great Falls, Brown defeated Dylan Lemery 6-3 to give OCU an opportunity to win the dual in the 285-pound match. OCU trailed 16-15 entering the last match of the dual.
At 184, Mitchell Eichenauer knocked off Adam Wolfe 8-6 to cut the Stars' deficit to 16-12.
OCU had a 9-0 lead after the first two matches. Gomez, a senior from Noble, Okla., won 7-3 over Luke Schlosser in the 125-pound bout. Alvie Killingsworth of the Stars benefited from a forfeit at 133.
Against 10th-ranked Missouri Valley, Dan Mueller edged Brown 3-1 in the 285-pound match to provide the difference in the dual. Mueller is ranked sixth among NAIA heavyweights, while Brown, wresting up a weight, is ranked sixth among NAIA 197-pounders.
At 197, Cody Sivertsen picked up a forfeit for the Stars to tie the dual 19-19. At 174, Franco cut OCU's deficit to 16-13 with an 8-0 victory over Jamaal Bufford.
Meyer earned a 4-2 sudden-victory triumph over Dylan King at 157. Gomez pinned Ryan Stearns in 1:36 to begin the dual at 125.
OCU takes on 13th-ranked Missouri Baptist at 6 p.m. Wednesday in St. Louis.
