Stars oust Our Lady of the Lake 91-73

No. 1-ranked OCU meets Westminster at 9:45 a.m. Oklahoma time Friday

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University cruised past Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 91-73 on Wednesday at the Frankfort Convention Center in the NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament.
Lauren Gober, a junior from Newcastle, Okla., fueled the Stars with 24 points while dropping in four 3-pointers. OCU (31-1) will take on Westminster (Utah) at 9:45 a.m. CST Friday.
Dietra Caldwell, a senior from Missouri City, Texas, added 17 points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals for the Stars. Philicia Kelly, a senior from Nassau, Bahamas, contributed 13 points off the bench.
Tiffany Goldwire, a senior from Oklahoma City, posted 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals, while Nicollette Smith, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., supplied OCU with 10 points and five rebounds.
Gober scored 17 of her points in the first period. She matched her career-high scoring total set at St. Gregory's on Jan. 22, 2011.
“Lauren had a great first half,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “Dietra Caldwell, Philicia Kelly and Nicollette Smith picked up the offense in the second half.”
OCU reached 90 points for the 14th time this season. The Stars shot 51.7 percent from the field, 58.6 percent in the second half.
“It was a really tough first-round game,” Edmisson said. “The kids played well at times. We didn't play particularly well on defense, but had some success on offense. We will have another tough game Friday.”
Our Lady of the Lake cut OCU's lead to 31-27 on Stacey Darnley's 3-pointer at the 6:01 mark of the first half. The Stars answered with a 13-0 run.
Smith had two buckets during that stretch. Goldwire and Kayla MacKenzie capped OCU's spree by canning two free throws each. MacKenzie's free throw put the Stars up 44-27 with 1:21 remaining in the first.
Chelsea Solis' trey sliced Our Lady of the Lake's deficit to 60-53 with 13:02 left in the game.
OCU held off Our Lady of the Lake. Gober fired in a 3 to provide OCU its largest lead of the contest at 88-67 with 3:32 showing.
Goldwire dropped in three free throws, and Gober drained back-to-back treys as the Stars built an early 9-2 lead.
