OCU tops Wayland Baptist 37-9

The Stars got pins from Kidd Gomez and Cody Sivertsen en route to the 38-9 victory

Stanley Lattimore posted an 11-3 major decision against Wayland Baptist.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University topped Wayland Baptist (Texas) 37-9 Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 14 in NAIA wrestling, got pins from senior Kidd Gomez and sophomore Cody Sivertsen to improve to 3-1 on the season.
"The guys wrestled really hard," OCU coach Archie Randall said. "We have a couple of kids that made some mistakes that we'll need to correct, but once we do that I think we'll be fine. I was really pleased with their performance tonight."
Gomez, ranked No. 11, started the dual by pinning Justin Williamson in 4:57 at 125 pounds. Sophomore Tyler Espitia followed with a 4-0 decision over Ruben Lujan at 133.
After Wayland Baptist picked up wins at 141 and 149, senior Mark Meyer, ranked No. 7, posted a 6-4 decision over Bernie Gonzalez at 157. At 165, freshman Zach Skates, ranked No. 3, notched a 22-6 technical fall over Chris Hunt.
Wayland Baptist forfeited 174, and Sivertsen pinned Miguel Tovar in 4:21 at 184. Sivertsen's pin gave OCU a 30-9 lead.
Sophomore Michael Brown, ranked fifth, turned in an 11-2 major decision over Jacob Stock at 197. Senior Stanley Lattimore finished the dual for OCU with an 11-3 major decision over Markese Christian at 285.
The Stars will return to action in the Newman Invitational on Sunday in Wichita, Kan.
