Stars top College of the Ozarks 87-74

OCU outscored Lady Bobcats 62-24 in the paint to move to 6-2 on season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University topped College of the Ozarks (Mo.) 87-74 in a matchup of top-10 teams Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 8 in NAIA Division I, scored 42 points off 25 turnovers to pick up the win over the Lady Bobcats, ranked No. 4 in NAIA Division II, and moved to 6-2 on the season.
A pair of baskets from senior Lauren Gober pushed to the Stars to a 6-2 lead at the 18:28 mark.
After a four-minute scoring drought for both teams, the Stars got back-to-back-to-back transition layups from Gober, Ravven Brown and Jessica Lankston to spark a 21-6 OCU run. Kayla MacKenzie capped the run with a bucket in the paint. The Stars scored 12 fastbreak points during the run to take a 27-8 lead with 9:27 remaining in the first half.
At the 3:51 mark, Kayla Weinreis hit a jumper to cut the OCU lead to 15. Desiree Jeffries answered with a pair of baskets in the paint to balloon the Stars' lead to 38-17 with 2:57 left in the half.
After a pair of free throws from Brown, Ozarks got three points from Kayla Kepler to cut the OCU lead to 15 and make the score 40-25 at halftime.
OCU outscored Ozarks 28-6 in the paint in the first half. The Stars forced 17 first-half turnovers and scored 14 points in transition.
The Stars held the Lady Bobcats to 28 percent shooting from the floor while shooting 41 percent from the field in the first half.
Katie Hall scored a pair of buckets in the paint to help OCU start the second half on a 13-2 run. Hall fueled the run with six points and an assist and gave the Stars a 53-27 lead with 15:40 remaining.
Kepler and Morgan Smith converted on six free-throw attempts to cut the Stars' lead to 15 with 10 minutes to play.
The Stars responded with three straight buckets from Autumn Huffman, Cara Pugh and Jeffries to spark a 13-4 OCU run. Pugh notched five points and Jeffries added four to give OCU a 72-48 lead at the 6:46 to go.
Jeffries posted a pair of layups to help OCU maintain an 18-point lead with 2:51 left in the game. Jeffries scored 15 of her team-high 22 points in the second half to keep OCU in front of the Lady Bobcats.
Ozarks hit 19-of-22 from the free-throw line in the second half and finished the game on an 11-4 run, but the Stars held on and picked up the 87-74 victory.
OCU dominated in the paint, outscoring Ozarks 62-24 in the post. The Stars score 42 points off turnovers and outscored the Lady Bobcats 20-2 in fastbreak points.
Jeffries led the way with a season-high 22 points on 69 percent shooting. The senior from Oklahoma City added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Hall posted her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. MacKenzie and Brown followed with 10 points apiece and Lankston added nine points and six assists.
The Stars will return to action against No. 4 Westmont (Calif.) on Dec. 28 in the GSAC Challenge at 7:30 p.m. in Santa Barbara, Calif.
