Stars pound Evangel 86-53

Katie Hall scored 21 points and pulled seven rebounds in her OCU debut

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University powered past Evangel (Mo.) 86-53 in its season opener Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 10 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, got 21 points from senior Katie Hall and 19 points from senior Lauren Gober to get past Evangel and hand Latricia Trammell her first victory as the Stars' head coach.
Junior Autumn Huffman pulled down an offensive rebound and scored at the 15:23 mark of the first half to spark a 10-2 OCU run. Junior Kayla MacKenzie fueled the run with a pair of free throws and fast-break bucket to give OCU a 16-8 lead with 12 minutes to play in the half.
After a pair of Jessica Lankston free throws, Gober buried back-to-back jumpers to send the Stars on a 17-2 run. MacKenzie scored six points and grabbed two steals during the run to give OCU a 40-17 lead with 3:39 remaining in the half.
OCU and the Crusaders traded baskets the rest of the half, and the Stars took a 47-27 lead to the locker room at halftime.
The Stars held Evangel to 33 percent shooting from the floor in the first half. OCU shot 21 free throws in the period.
Hall scored the Stars' first eight points of the second half to help OCU maintain a 55-33 lead at the 15:39 mark.
OCU lead by as many as 35 points in the second half and closed the game on a 5-2 run to pick up the 86-53 victory.
OCU outscored Evangel 42-20 in the paint and scored 43 points off 26 turnovers. The Stars only gave away 10 turnovers and shot 50 percent from the field on the game.
Hall posted a game-high 21 points, pulled down seven rebounds and passed out four assists to lead the Stars. Gober followed with 19 points on 40 percent shooting from behind the 3-point line. Lankston and MacKenzie each pitched in 10 points and Huffman chipped in with eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Stars will return to action against Southwestern Oklahoma State in the Southwestern Classic at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in Weatherford, Okla.
