OCU trims Bacone 25-21

Campbell, Meyer post falls for Stars in matchup of top 25-rated teams

Michael Brown checked in at sixth in the NAIA's last 197-pound rankings.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Michael Brown's major-decision victory brought Oklahoma City University a 25-21 victory over Bacone on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena in a clash of top 25-ranked teams in NAIA wrestling.
Brown, a sophomore from Noble, Okla., prevailed 9-1 over Vincent Opuiyo at 197 pounds to break a 21-21 tie. OCU, ranked 16th, improved to 2-1, while 19th-ranked Bacone went to 1-1.
At 197, Brown racked up a reversal and two stalling points in the second period. His riding time provided OCU with a bonus-point victory. Brown sits sixth in the NAIA's 197-pound ratings.
“It's a good way to finish the match because we have a lot of confidence in Mike Brown,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “Mike Brown does a good job. He should be ranked in the top two or three in the next couple of weeks.”
Tyson Campbell put the Stars in front 21-18 by pinning Alvaro Zermeno in 4:02 at 174 pounds. OCU worked from behind throughout the dual, leading 4-3 after the 125-pound match. Bacone built an 18-4 advantage after Danny Rosas' 5-2 win over Hunter Muskrat at 149.
Mark Meyer extended his OCU career record with his 56th fall as a Star. Meyer, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., finished Arnol Arroliga in 3:45 in the 157-pound match. Meyer is ranked 12th in the NAIA at his weight.
Zach Skates cut the Stars' deficit to 18-15. Skates, a redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., pummeled John Kahler 23-7 using nine takedowns, a near fall and a reversal. Skates, ranked third among NAIA 165-pounders, ended the match by technical fall in 6:37.
“Fortunately for us we have some pretty good older kids that have been in the program for a while that came through,” Randall said. “Freshman Zach Skates comes through. Senior Mark Meyer gets the fall. The pivotal match was Tyson Campbell getting the fall at 174. Tyson Campbell getting the fall was critically important which gave us the lead going into 184.”
OCU's Kidd Gomez topped Ryan Gauthier in a matchup of ranked 125-pounders. Gomez, a senior from Noble, Okla., posted a 17-4 win, extending his lead with an escape, three-point near fall and a takedown in the final period. Gomez holds the eighth spot in the rankings, while Gauthier is 13th.
The Stars competes in the Fort Hays State-Bob Smith Open at 9 a.m. Saturday in Hays, Kan.
